GENERAL PLANNING FRAMEWORK
Attic conversion:
connect the next steps.
Put the scope, sequence, purchases and money in one plan. Keep assumptions separate from confirmed requirements.
Check that the space can become a room
Headroom, floor structure, stair access, escape windows and fire separation decide whether an attic can become habitable space. Ask a qualified designer or engineer and the building authority; do not assume an existing floor can carry a new room.
Separate roof changes from interior work
Dormers, roof windows or a raised roof line can need planning approval in addition to a building permit. Record whether the exterior changes, because that answer often changes which approvals apply.
Plan insulation, ventilation and services together
Converting an attic moves the insulated boundary to the roof slope or kneewalls. Coordinate insulation, ventilation, heating and wiring routes before drywall goes up, and leave required inspections visible in the plan.
Sequence the stair early
A new stair takes space from the floor below and affects that room's layout. Confirm its position and any changes below before ordering materials.
