GENERAL PLANNING FRAMEWORK
Garden suite / ADU:
connect the next steps.
Put the scope, sequence, purchases and money in one plan. Keep assumptions separate from confirmed requirements.
Confirm a second unit is allowed
Garden suites, laneway homes, coach houses and accessory dwellings are controlled by zoning and building rules that vary widely. Confirm eligibility, size limits, setbacks, parking and servicing requirements with the responsible authority first.
Plan utilities and access
A separate dwelling usually needs water, sewer, electrical and sometimes gas connections, plus fire-access or addressing requirements. These can drive cost and schedule more than the building itself; keep them as explicit lines.
Treat it as a small house
Foundation, framing, envelope, interior finishes and fixtures all apply. Use the connected plan to sequence approvals, rough-in, inspections and finishes, and enter supplier lead times for windows, doors and cabinets.
Keep tenancy and tax questions separate
Renting the unit can bring registration, insurance, tax and tenancy-law obligations. This tool does not assess them; note them as open items for the right professionals.
These are general workflow suggestions, not a construction method, design, code interpretation or local cost estimate. Template durations are illustrative and have not been reviewed for your property. Ask qualified professionals and the responsible authority to confirm what applies.
